Elective positions are usually considered a job for the learned and highly placed members of the society.

However, this does not apply to residents of Turkana's Lakeside ward who have hit the headlines by electing an illiterate member of their own to represent their interests in the Turkana county assembly.

Leah Nachere who was elected to represent the Turkana South sub county ward  neither has any formal education nor does she have any knowledge of any of the two national languages (English and Swahili) but managed to defeat seven other candidates including the incumbent in the concluded August 8 general polls.

According to her,her only motive is to support her people and fulfill all the promises she gave to them during the campaign period.

''I want to fully represent my people and avail all the available funds to them and as we make bold steps towards development and prosperity'' said Nachere with the help of a translator.

The 67 year old's success comes at a time when many women politicians have managed to set the records by clinching top elective positions including Governors and Senators as opposed to the 2013 general election where all elected Governors and Senators were male.
