Her name is Robertina Chikamai, a farmer practicing aquaponic poultry. This kind of farming entails aquaculture, poultry and crop farming, all in one place, one farm, with the three inter-depending on each other.

"The settings of this kind of farming are in a way that poultry is kept in a place where droppings from chicken fertilize water which is later used as feeds for fish and the same water is used to irrigate vegetables and the cycle continues," explains Chikamai.

She begun the project in 2015 with 6,000 fingerlings of catfish and 4,500 fingerlings of tilapia. However, all the catfish died following the bad weather and she had to restock.

"I began all this with Sh500,000 capital that was given to me by parents after failing to get a formal employment," said Chikamai while at her farm in Kimumu, Eldoret town.

"I can now live a comfortable life through this venture. I urge other youths to try farming and they won't regret instead of looking for white collar jobs which are scarce," she added.

Despite engaging in a unique kind of farming, Chikamai has one challenge - lack of market for catfish as many people within Eldoret town Tilapia and Nile-Perch to Catfish.

To mitigate against market concerns for the catfish, Robertina is now thinking of value addition.

During the marking of World Food Day in Turbo in January, Chikamai's efforts were recognized after she was named the best woman in Agriculture in Uasin Gishu, an honor she rightly deserves.
