Men at the Coast have been sked to lead the fight against gender based violence.
The men have been mentioned as the best tool to lead in the fight against the social vice and was well encourage women to join them in ensuring gender based violence cases at the Coast are tamed.
While addressing a ‘Men only’ gender based violence forum at Mtwapa on Sunday, ‘Pamoja for transformation trust Programme’s manager Paul Odumbe said that the Non-governmental Organisation has been working at the Coast towards fighting gender based violence cases and for the last two years the situation has positively change.
He said that the main reason for the organization to bring together men from various sectors was because men were blamed for the increase of gender and sexual violence at the Coast.
Odumbe said that if men were accorded the serious challenges of taming gender and sexual based violence at the Coast then the region would successful decrease the number of sexual and other gender related violence cases reported in the region on daily basis.
“Men should now join women in curbing gender related violence, that is why we have called a ‘Men only’ forum to discuss on how we can tackle the social problem,” added Mr. Odumbe.
He said that the men involved in the challenge were drawn from the religious sector, the media, civil society, the education sector among other sectors at the Coast.
“Our focus is on Kilifi County where early or forced marriages have been reported, however, tides are changing and parents are now taking their children to school,” he added.
He went on, “Comparing with the earlier situation two years ago, the interventions made in schools and in the villages have led to locals standing up and taking actions whether by reporting or by gathering enough evidence to ensure the perpetrators are behind bars,”.
