A Kiambu nurse has urged married men in the area to always accompany their wives to family planning sessions so as to help them make the right decisions.
Speaking from her office on Wednesday, Purity Waruiru, a nurse at the Kiambu District Hospital, family planning department, said that most women come to the health facilities alone making it difficult for them to arrive at certain crucial decisions concerning family planning methods.
She said that family planning is a family issue that needs to be discussed by both partners before and after marriage in order to raise a happy family.
However, Waruiru said that most women who visit health facilities are rarely accompanied by their husbands, an indication that most couples do not coordinate well when matters concerning the size of their family come up.
“Since this is a family issue, I would advocate for couples to coordinate when making decisions concerning the methods that will suit them in spacing their children. This will also help in avoiding conflict between them in future,” she said.
Waruiru also pointed out that family planning helps couples to bring up healthy and happy families.
She added that claims that contraceptives make women age faster or infertile were myths because whenever a client experiences negative effects on a particular family planning method, they can always shift to one that suits their body.
She therefore encouraged couples to seek counselling from experts before settling on a particular family planning method to avoid any negative effects.
