It is only three matches into the season and though too early to mention it, newcomers, Menengai Oilers are showing all signs, intention, and hunger for great achievements as head coach Gibson Weru has repeatedly underlined and said of their long-term goals of winning the league title this season.
“Our main focus and goal are to ensure that we’re improving and getting better in every match. We are confident of playing well if we stick to our structures well and play according to our system which most importantly enable us to win the championship title and get a promotion to Kenya Cup,” Weru told People Sports.
On Match Day three of the 2017/18 KRU Championship which saw six fixtures on the cards across different venues countrywide, Menengai Oilers were the only team who recorded bonus points win courtesy of a 26-17 win over Kisumu RFC to maintained top spot on the log with 15 maximum points.
Both Kenya Cup relegated sides, Mean Machine and Western Bulls eyeing to return to the top-flight league found it hard in their third time of asking in the championship as they failed to grab bonus points in their narrow wins over Ngong RFC (5-3) and Egerton Wasps (12-8) respectively, an outcome that sees them occupy second and third positions, tied up on 14 points, a point shy of league leaders Menengai Oilers.
United States International University Africa (USIU-Africa) Martials 21-5 win over South Coast Pirates elevated them from fifth to the fourth position on the standings with eight points from two matches tied up.
Ngong RFC earned a losing bonus point in their 3-5 loss to Machine but that acted less in terms of standings as they dropped from fourth to the sixth position on the log with six points while Catholic Monks moved up to seventh with five points.
