Menjo wants KCC reverted back to farmers
Kenya Farmers Association director Kipkorir Arap Menjo has urged the national government to fast-track the process of reverting Kenya Cooperative Creameries to the farmers.
“When the NARC regime took over power back in 2002, we had a successful dairy farmers meeting at Eldoret KCC factory where over 300 farmers who attended the meeting petitioned the government to return KCC to farmers," Menjo said.
Menjo said former President Mwai Kibaki used executive orders to buy back the company when he received their petition.
He addressed the press in Eldoret town on Saturday.
“The government paid a sum of Sh570 million to the individuals who had taken over the milk processor then worth about Sh7 billion, It was to revert to the owners (farmers) in six months, it is now 16 years down the line with no indication of that promise being honored,” Menjo said.
Menjo reiterated that during the eleventh parliament, they appeared before the Privatization Commission twice and had a stormy debate with the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture twice, "but our deliberations weren't presented to the floor of the House for debate."
“Now powerful people don't want to let it go because Dandora factory sits on a 52 acre land and Miritini in Mombasa 35 acres worth billions of shillings among others across the country. As farmers we will not allow KCC to be taken by some few self-centered individuals instead we want it back,” Menjo added.
