Police in Ruiru were forced to spend half an hour engaging a mentally ill man during the Mashujaa Day celebrations who attempted to throw stones at a senior official delivering the president’s speech.
The man is said to have been asking for drinks which were on the high table since the celebrations commenced and the deputy county commissioner (DCC) allegedly asked the police officers to take him away from the site.
The middle-aged man was reluctant to leave the stadium, forcing the police to carry him off the place.
He kept on playing with the officers’ minds as he was appearing and disappearing at the event, which irritated master of ceremony Mwachidudu Chimera, who is also the assistant DCC.
Mwachidudu ordered his officers to arrest the man several times but the crowd defended him as they know him as a kind resident of the area despite his condition.
According to the residents, the man nicknamed ‘Kaugi’ for his academic credentials had been bewitched after he passed his KCSE examinations while others claim he abused drugs leading to the mental problem.
The man finally left peacefully on his own after he was given a bottle of water by Mwachidudu and the DCC went on with the speech.
