A 30-year-old mentally ill man was on Tuesday evening lynched by an irate mob at Bondeni Estate, Nakuru County, after he was suspected to be a robber.
The man had earlier been reported missing from his relatives’ home at Teachers Estate for about a week, before the incident happened.
Confirming the incident, Nakuru police boss, Benard Kioko, said that the deceased was attacked by bar patrons in Bondeni area for allegedly snatching a mobile phone from one of the revelers.
“We rushed to the scene after being alerted of the incident only to find the man had already been beaten up and lynched by an angry crowd,” saod Kioko.
The police later found out from the deceased’s aunt that the man was mentally ill. The man had earlier been admitted at the Nakuru General Hospital in June this year, and was due to return for a medical check up before he disappeared from the estate.
“This is yet another unfortunate incident and we strongly appeal to members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands and let the police deal with such matters,” added Kioko.
The body was later taken to the Nakuru General Hospital Mortuary.
