[Photo|Kiraitu Murungi]Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi paid a courtesy call to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations offices in Nairobi.With agriculture being the backbone of Kenya's economy, FAO and the County Government of Meru have renewed their commitment towards assisting Meru residents achieve food security and ward off malnutrition. "We have in the same forum called for technical expertise in exploring opportunities to grow dry land rice, the initiative having shown great promise in its pilot phase in Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties," said Kiraitu on Monday.FAO's Country Representative Gabriel Rugalema expressed enthusiasm at the upcoming Meru Youth Service, terming it a great solution given the aging population of farmers."We urge our youth to take up agriculture, with green grams, avocados and macadamia nuts possessing potential for agricultural and economic empowerment," urged the governor.
