Moi University Vice Chancellor Richard Mibei has asked the government not to force students and teachers to return to Garissa until the security situation in the county is normalised.

Speaking at his office on Friday, Mibei said that it wrong for the government to force teachers to terror prone areas until their security is guaranteed.

The Vice Chancellor said that the security of teachers and students must be taken care of first before allowing students and teachers to return to the area.

He said that though there is an education crisis in some parts of Northern Kenya due to insecurity, the government should restore security.

“The government should be reasonable and normalise security before asking teachers and students to return to Garissa. The April 2 terrorist attacks on Garissa University College and other previous attacks paint a gloomy security situation,” he said.

Mibei added that students can only learn and concentrate on their studies when they are assured of their safety.

He, however, asked institutions of higher learning and schools to work with the government on security issues saying that security is a collaborative issue that needs clear and consulted suggestions.

At the same time, the Vice Chancellor said that Garissa university survivors who were admitted at the university are doing well.

He said that the university admitted 500 students from Garissa University campus.

“We expect them to start their assessment examinations in the coming weeks,” he said.

Mibei said that some of the students are still affected by the April terrorist attacks that left 148 of their colleagues dead.
