Former Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom, Michael Joseph, will be inaugurated as the Chancellor of Maseno University during the 14th graduation ceremony to be held next Wednesday. Michael Joseph was appointed Chancellor of the University in January 2014 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The former CEO, who becomes the fourth chancellor, will take over from Prof. Florida Karani who has been vice-chancellor since 2009. In a media brief on Thursday by the University’s Director of Public Communications, Japher Otieno, Joseph will also be honored and conferred with degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in recognition as an astute telecommunications engineer and ICT practitioner. “Mr. Joseph will be tasked with the overseeing the growth and expansion of the University in the coming year,” read the statement. The former CEO is also an accomplished business leader who has promoted e-commerce and entrepreneurship and was the brainchild behind the M-Pesa money transfer service. The University will also award Mr. Paul Otiende Amollo, the Chair of the Commission of Administrative Justice, Honorary Doctors of Letter (Honoris Causa) degree of Maseno University to recognize him as a champion of justice, an expert in constitutionalism, an advocate of human rights and an efficient ombudsman. Among the graduands, 27 will be awarded PhD, 85 Masters and 1,499 Bachelor degrees while 32 will be conferred with Post Graduate Diplomas, 226 Diplomas and 179 Certificates. Education Cabinet Secretary, Jacob Kaimenyi is expected to be the chief guest.
