Stinking cells at various police stations in Nakuru county will soon be something of the past following intervention of Midrift Human Rights Network which is working closely with police to ensure improved policing.
The organization which at the moment is working closely with Central, Kaptembwa, Elementaita and Naivasha police station s in Nakuru County has partnered with Jamii Dhabiti program and Nakuru Town East as well as Nakuru West Constituencies to ensure challenges affecting police stations in the areas are addressed.
Midrift Hurinet Chief Executive Officer Joseph Omondi said as an organization in partnership with CDF they are working on a program to address the challenges facing police stations,
“We have had a meeting on the same and we invited CDF members, community policing committees as well as police from the four police stations where we work. The challenges were identified among them poor toilets as well as housing and I think in Central police, Nakuru East the MP will sit down with the OCS and agree on the toilets,” he said.
Omondi said this will help in bringing back the image of police stations as well as ensure that the police officers deliver quality service in a good atmosphere.
On issues of corruption among police officers, Omondi called for concerted efforts from both the police chiefs and the community in ensuring that the society is corruption free.
While lauding the community in Nakuru County for embracing the program in ensuring better community policing, Omondi also appealed to the county government of Nakuru to ensure the county policy on urban violence prevention as well as county policing authority are in place.
“We hope the county policy on urban violence prevention will be passed by our county assembly as well as ensure the county policing authority is in place as this will help since there will be representation from the grassroot level,” said Omondi.
He was speaking during an interview at the Midrift Hurinet offices in Nakuru Town.
