Fish trade in Lake Victoria's Migingo Island is booming following a shortage of fish.Migingo Beach Management Unit Chairman John Obunge on Monday attributed the high prices for both dried as well as fried fish to an acute shortage of the aquatic product due to the current dry spell.According to Obunge, a kilogram of fish which traded at Sh230 as late as November currently sales at between Sh270 and Sh290 depending on the number of traders seeking to buy the product. He said traders cruise to the island from as far as Nairobi and Kampala Uganda to buy fish."The prices have gone up because of the dry season. Most fish have gone deep in the lake because of food shortage," he said. He, however, said the situation may normalise soon as the weatherman projects the lakeside region will receive average rain between January and March. He also said the relationship between Kenyan and Ugandan traders has improved following last year's release of six Kenyan fishermen arrested by Ugandan authorities in the rocky island.
