Traders at Ranen centre in Migori County are counting losses after property of an unknown value was destroyed by fire. The fire razed up shops where only a few properties were salvaged by the fire brigade team from South Nyanza Sugar Company who responded later on. According to the affected persons, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an arsonist on a revenge mission. Aston Otieno said the fire may have been started deliberately by suspected arsonists who, according to him were out to revenge on him over his stand against reported insecurity in the trading centre. Awendo police boss Meshack Nyili said police, who were on a night patrol around the area, are the ones who saw the fire razing the house before they raised alarm and helped in the rescue. “We have launched an investigation to ascertain what might have caused the fire,” he said. Nyili however urged residents to cooperate with the police in fight against the reported insecurity in the area. The residents of the region are appealing for additional police officers in the area to boost security. “Cases of insecurity particularly within Ranen trading centre have instilled fear among people operating businesses in the centre,” one trader said.
