The saga has since seen more powerful and influential names dragged in, including that of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his Agriculture counterpart Mwangi Kiunjuri.

On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta's younger brother Muhoho Kenyatta was also linked to the saga with Aldai lawmaker Cornelius Serem during a joint house committee linking him to one of the companies said to have imported the product.

In a tweet hours later, Miguna accused the Daily Nation of concealing the information by posting a misleading link which instead lands the readers to another completely different story when they try to access it.

"Shame on the Daily Nation for concealing the story linking the Uhuru Kenyatta and Muhoho families to the criminal importation of poisonous sugar to Kenyans," he said.

"When one clicks on the first link, s/he is redirected to a dummy insulin story page without a byline or text," complained the outspoken barrister.

Muhoho's alleged importation could have constituted to close to one million metric tonnes that were allowed into the country following the government's blanket allowance of imports to cover up for sugarcane shortage in the country.

The sugar has however been since declared unfit for human use with the ministry of interior confirming that it contains deposits of copper and mercury metals.
