Yesterday I was reading the literature written by one of the most prolific writers Chinua Achebe (A Man of the People) and the first leader to come into my mind was Mike Sonko.
Hate him or love him, Sonko has touched the hearts of many Kenyans. If only we had 40 Sonko’s in parliament, Kenya would be a corner of paradise. I know someone is already thinking I have been paid a few coins to eat Nyoma Choma in Machakos town to rally Kenyans to vote for him.
Let us call a spade a spade. Sonko’s exemplary leadership speaks for itself. From Malaba to Mombasa, Mbooni to Kakuma, Kisumu to the land of Matoke(Kisii) and Machakos to Garissa, Sonko does not need any introduction.
There is no doubt that he is the only Senator who can vie anywhere in the country and emerge as a winner. Despite being Kamba, Kikuyus, Luopeans (as my brothers from the Lakeside refer to themselves), Kisii’s, Kalenjins, and other communities respect him for his good deeds.
If he was a football player Sonko would have been the most valuable player in the Parliamentary League (PL). Who remembers the Sonko Rescue team?
Although many critics accused him of offering services that the county government was supposed to provide, he had good intentions for Nairobians.
If today Sonko stood up and declared that he is going for the presidential seat in the upcoming general elections, Uhuru and Raila would have sleepless nights.
Since his entry into the political arena, Sonko has been growing from strength to strength. I am not suggesting he is perfect. He is also human and man makes mistakes.
Unlike politicians who are ever looking for ways to satisfy their selfish interests by hiding behind parliamentary privileges, Sonko has done a lot when it comes to charity. Indeed, Sonko is a man of the people.
