Taj Mall owner Rameshchandra Govind Gorasia said he will vie on a Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) party ticket in the race to replace Senator Mike Sonko who has declared interest in the governor seat.

The businessman told the Standard that he will not spend more than Sh2 million in his bid to became the county’s second senator.

“I am going to the Senate to work, not to steal from Kenyans, so I see no reason why I should spend millions in campaigns,”  Gorasia said.

He insisted that the money will be spent purely on campaign posters, t-shirts and fuel for the vehicles he will use in his campaign rallies.

“I won’t give handouts to voters or bribe party officials or polling clerks, like other politicians. I am going to create change in the Senate, so I have to get there in a clean way,” he said.

Gorasia expressed confidence that he will clinch the seat promising to tackle the vices and injustices city residents have been subjected to for many years.

“If I join the Senate, I will be part of the Government and can move measures, through Parliament, to create policies that favour business people, tame graft, and create a conducive environment for business owners,”  he told the Standard.

He added:  “I hope Nairobi residents vote for me and I promise them that I will effect real tangible change in the city.”

The businessman is expected to face off with other aspirants including Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja of Jubilee Party who has also declared interest in the seat.
