Traders in Mumias East are counting loses after bulldozers from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) pulled down stalls in Shanda market Mumias East sub constituency.
The traders' representative Geoffrey Opondo said on Wednesday that bulldozers from KeNHA pulled down the business stalls and shops without notice, a development he condemned.
Some of the stalls demolished are those constructed by the county government of Kakamega calling on Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to intervene and compel the national government compensate traders who lost property as well as buildings.
"KeNHA did not give us notice. If they have prove to that effect let them show," Opondo said.
Most traders whose stalls were demolished, he said, are now compelled to transport their merchandise home every evening after work and vise versa in the morning.
This he said is too cumbersome to the traders.
"Why didn't they give us notice. Who does not want good roads if it's roads they want to construct?" Opondo posed as he spoke to a local radio station.
He said some of the business owners in Shanda market have huge loans to settle in various banks since they secured the money from the lending financial institutions to start up business.
