Bahati division chief Amos Maina said that the bhang being smoked by young people in the area originated from the stone quarries where it was being sold.

Maina met quarry owners at his offices yesterday; he said that many young men in the area were engaged in bhang smoking because it was easily available.

“I want all quarry owners who are here to go and tell their miners that we are well aware of the kind of  secret business they are doing behind the scenes, and to tell them that it is no longer a secret. If they don’t stop we will be forced to close the quarries,” said Maina.

Maina’s warning came after Sunday’s incident when police in the area impounded 1000 rolls of bhang that had been stuffed inside charcoal sacks and kept in a stone quarry.

Chairman of the Bahati quarry owners Benson Mwai however dismissed claims that the quarries were being used as bhang selling points, and said that a single incident at one quarry should not be used to tarnish the name of the other quarries.

“Yes it is true that some bhang was nabbed in a quarry but that does not mean that all the quarries are bhang selling points. The police should deal with the particular quarry as an isolated incident because generalizing the issue will affect innocent people,” said Mwai.
