A country that does not invest in education has no future and remains on the periphery of development, Education Cabinet Secretary has said.
Prof Jacob Kaimenyi said that investing in education is important as it enhances the realisation of development goals in the country.
Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) at Juja during a joint graduation ceremony between Jkuat and Pan African Universities, Kaimenyi said that the role being played by the higher education institutions cannot be ignored.
“Universities play a major role in development of a nation and impact positively to the lives of people,” said Kaimenyi.
He however urged universities to develop specific and clear courses in their teaching curriculum to reflect the current market demand.
“Universities should be innovate to teach relevant market-oriented courses that are in tandem with current labour markets,” said the minister.
He urged universities to strive to be accountable to value and maintain high standards of education. He further said that the Ministry of Education has rolled out policies that favour the growth of universities.
The occasion was graced by among others Dr Nkosazana Ndlamini-Zuma, the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jkuat chancellor Prof Geoffrey Ole Maloiy and other high-ranking government officials.
