​Devolution and Planning Ministry has given relief food to Street Children Rehabilitation Centers in Kisumu County.The food was distributed, Friday to 12 centers; 11centers in Kisumu and one center in Luanda Vihiga County.Viviene Simwa, the Chief Communications Officer at the Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate, said 69 bags of maize, 43 bags of beans, 30 bags of rice, 28 cartons of cooking fat and dozens of porridge flour bags were set for distribution.According to Lucy Kamuri, a Program Officer in charge of the Street Family Trust Fund, the exercise was a follow-up visit.Earlier on the Rehabilitation Centers were visited by Principle Secretary for the State Department of Special Programs Josephat Oyiela Mukobe, who promised them food supplies.“The rehabilitation centers are doing a good job by caring for the street families, we have to supplement their supplies to ensure they are sustained,” said Kamuri.Agape Street Children Rehabilitation Center Director, Chris Page said that he was delighted by the governments’ aid to the children whom he said were at great risk and needed timely support. Page is also the Chairman of the Kisumu Street Children Rehabilitation Consortium. He said the donation was well-timed but also observed that the supply could not last long and therefore urged the national government to initiate more frequent supplies.“It’s the first time they are supporting us since the year started,” Page confirmed.He continued to say that the number of street children in Kisumu had dwindled.According to their latest records, Kisumu was having 119 street children that have not be absorbed in the charitable centersHe said that last year they managed to get 360 street children out of the Streets of Kisumu. Nonetheless, he said others are still coming in the city from neighboring countries and places like Kakamega, Luanda, and Nakuru among other places.
