The Education ministry has rolled out an initiative dubbed ‘Tupeleke Watoto Shule’.
The initiative seeks to ensure as many children as possible have access to education.
In unveiling in the initiative, acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i cited the low enrollment of Form one student especially in the Coastal region that saw the admission deadline extended to Wednesday.
Matiang’i says the initiative will ensure no single child fails to access education.
However Kwale County Women Representative Zuleikha Juma attributed the low turnout to failure by the government to live to its pre-election promise of rolling out free secondary education, claims CS Matiang’i dismissed.
The CS was in Mombasa County on a fact finding mission following reports that the Coastal region has been hit by low Form one turnout.
He visited Mama Ngina Girls High school before meeting Coastal leaders later Wednesday afternoon to look into ways of addressing the issue.
Taita Taveta County Governor Granton Samboja who accompanied the minister reiterated that it is high time parents in the region change their attitude and prioritize education to unlock the region’s potential.
