St. Patrick’s Special school head teacher Joseph Mwangi stated that the children lack opportunity for education due to inadequacy in such units.

"If all schools found special units, the mentally handicapped children will get an opportunity to train and advance their lives after securing jobs. Such special schools not only try to correct the mental state of children but also grow skills," said Mwangi.

Mwangi called on parents whose children are mentally challenged not to be in denial and lock them up in their homes, but to instead register them in special schools where they can profit from the programmes.

He said that his school has 104 pupils aged between seven and 18 years, adding that before the students are admitted, they endure an assessment to evidently identify their challenges for proper settlement.

"Students that are found with autism join the autistic lesson while the others are put in occupational classes ranging from level one another according to academic performance," he added.

The head teacher noted that level one and two pre-vocational classes is where skills are learnt prior students advancement to vocational classes where they commence making products such as handbags and ornaments.

The educationist added that the students also join in co-curricular activities like sports where they are trained to play hockey which helps them to coordinate well.

He noted that most children who enroll for classes in the school are from poor backgrounds.

Mwangi was speaking on Sunday in Kamwangi town.
