A 16-year-old secondary school girl has been arraigned at the Thika court charged with attempting to commit suicide.
Appearing before Thika Principal Magistrate Walter Onchuru, the form two student from Kiambu County was charged that on September 18 this year in Ruiru town, she ingested poison with the intention of committing suicide.
She pleaded guilty but shocked the court when she said that she opted to commit suicide after life became impossible for her following her recruitment into devil worship by her business studies teacher.
The girl told the court that she was under constant attacks by evil spirits which tend to control her decisions and mannerism. The girl’s father told the hushed court that his daughter had changed drastically from the time she joined the Girls Secondary school in Githunguri and constantly opts to lock herself in her room where she reads strange books.
He told the court that on the material day, the daughter went into his room and asked for Sh1,000 to buy a birthday cake. Thinking that it was a way of drawing closer to her, he gave her the money only for the girl to walk into a shop where she purchased the poison.
She was rescued by members of the public who noticed her writhing in pain on the street where they rushed her to Ruiru Sub-District Hospital where she was admitted and treated for intense poisoning.
In a dramatic move, the magistrate ordered for the immediate arrest of the teacher only identified as Virginia and investigations on her commenced. He said that it was unfortunate that people who are charged with the responsibilities of being caregivers were now turning against the children and enrolling them into dangerous organisations including devil worship and outlawed movements.
The girl was released on a Sh5,000 shillings bond and her case is set to be heard on November 28.
