Minority groups in Nakuru have been urged to form welfare groups to help agitate for their rights. Ogiek People’s Progressive Programme (OPPP) chair, Kiplagat Cheruiyot, said there was a need for minority groups to unite, when he addressed a Community Development Agenda Workshop at Sunrise Hotel in Njoro. The minority group leaders observed that this will help them increase their bargaining power in agitating for their rights. “The disabled, widows, orphans, slum dwellers and old people should come together in welfare groups and one larger umbrella body in order for their rights and plight to be addressed by both the national and county government as well as other stakeholders,” he said. He said unless they come together and form one umbrella organisation, their concerns, interests and cries shall never be noticed. The Ogiek minority group leader observed that since devolution was introduced in the country, members of the minority groups have continued experiencing discrimination in public resource distribution because they cannot afford to raise many votes to guarantee representation in political seats. He noted that unless minority groups come out to defend their constitutional rights, they would continue being deprived of the rights.
