Miraa chewing among the youths has been blamed for increased indolence among Kiganjo youths with local leaders now calling for a time frame to be created when miraa can be sold.
Speaking in Kiganjo on Sunday during a baraza, Komu sub location assistant chief, Joseph Njoroge noted that many local youths were spending most of their time in Muguka 'bases' engaging in idle talk and wasting their valuable time.
"As the area administration we have noted with a lot of concern that many area youths have now turned to miraa chewing where you will find them in those sheds as early as 10am doing nothing constructive but chatting and wasting time. These are young people who are supposed to be working rather than just lazing around. That is why the relevant agencies like NACADA needs to come in and do something," said Njoroge.
Njoroge said that the youths had found an alternative in miraa chewing since a crackdown on illicit brews was carried out last year.
Paul Mwaura, a local elder echoed the chief's sentiments saying that the youths should not be allowed to continue with the habit as it may lead to resurgence of crime in the area which has been down for some time.
"I totally agree with the assistant Chief that something needs to be done before things go out of hand. If we just keep quiet and watch, these young people might start being the problem in this area," said Mwaura.
