A section of miraa traders on Tuesday protested following the murder of two of their colleagues by criminal gangs in Kisauni, Mombasa County. The traders said there has been a rise in crime in the county due to criminal gangs who disrupt peace and intimidate people. The angry traders said the government and security agencies have been doing little to curb such incidents despite reporting the killings to the police. They said the two colleagues, Gideon Ntonyingi and Boniface Kaberia were killed by a well-known gang operating in Mlaleo and Soko Mjinga areas. The two areas are said to be dominated by the Wakali Kwanza and Wakali Wao criminal gangs.Kaberia's father, Meyota Kaberia, told journalists at the Coast General Hospital mortuary that they reported the deaths but police are yet to make any arrests.“Those who committed the murders are still at large. We feel unfairly targeted by local youth,” said Meyota.Area police boss Christopher Rotich said they are yet to arrest the culprits. He, however, said investigations into the incident are ongoing.Ntonyingi and Kaberia were reportedly confronted by the gang at their miraa shops and stabbed in the head and abdomen.During the incident, the gang members also stole cash, miraa and mobile phones from the victims.“We are aware of the incidents but wish to assure traders that we will ensure their lives and properties are protected,” said Rotich, as quoted by The Star.
