A two-kilometer Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line is set to be constructed to link the Miritini passenger train terminus to the Central Mombasa train station.
Speaking in Nairobi on Thursday, Kenya Railways Corporation managing director Atanas Maina, the new project will ease transport between the two points upon completion.
Before the construction of the link, Mombasa-bound passengers traveling on the SGR train from Nairobi were being compelled to alight at the Miritini before walking for 22 kilometers to Mombasa.
“The line will provide services for people leaving Syokimau train terminus to Mombasa and those coming from Mombasa to Nairobi by train via the Miritini terminus,” he said.
The corporation has embarked on feasibility studies to determine the actual cost before proceeding with the new development. The project will take approximately twelve months before completion.
Maina also revealed that the construction of the new project will start as soon as the feasibility is completed.
The feasibility test will be conducted by APEC Consortium Limited, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), China Railway Design Corporation. The project will cost Sh447.5 billion before it becomes operational.
Kenya Railways has also conducted CRRC Qiqihar, which is China’s biggest freight wagon manufacturer to assist in the servicing of the wagons and locomotives for effective performance.
