Likoni MP Mishi Mboko has called on the government to ensure the National Youth Service (NYS) programmes are implemented in all parts of the country.
The legislator complained that only a few youths in her constituency were enrolled in the NYS unlike in others areas where high numbers of unemployed have been absorbed in the programme.
"I am appealing to the government, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, to ensure young people in Likoni are enrolled in the NYS programmes. We have many youths out of school wasting away on drugs and crime after lacking something constructive to do after finishing schooling," she said.
Mboko was speaking on Friday during the presentation of Wings to Fly scholarships at Equity Bank Moi Avenue branch in Mombasa.
Only 8 students who completed their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCSE) this year from Likoni and Mvita were awarded the sponsorship.
The small number has been blamed on lack of support from USAID.
Mboko said the reduction in sponsorship had made it hard for good performers to realise their dreams.
"We expected more than 40 students to get scholarships. We urge USAID to reconsider its decision," she said.
The MP added that 46 bright and needy students will get sponsorship to pursue secondary education from Likoni National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
