Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko is set to lose Sh1 million he paid as surety if Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) leader Omar Mwamnuadzi continues to miss trial. Mr Mwamnuadzi, the founder and chairman of the separatist group, has absconded trial for a year now. During a court proceeding in Mombasa on Friday, state prosecutor Jami Yenina asked the court to make a decision on whether the Nairobi senator, who was present in court, should lose the Sh1 million after failing to produce the MRC official. The prosecutor was quick to add that there was no evidence showing Sonko had colluded with Mwamnuadzi. “There is no connection indicating Mwamnuadzi was entertained by the senator to disappear. It is the court’s discretion to justify if the surety has shown sufficient case to remain standing surety or have his surety forfeited,” Yenina said, as per The Standard. Sonko offered surety for 39 MRC officials, including the chairman of the group, who were facing charges of running an outlawed organisation. Fearing that Sonko may be losing interest, the state prosecutor asked the senator, who wants to become the next Nairobi governor, not to withdraw surety for the other 38 suspects. “For us we hope Sonko does not withdraw out of the case as surety for the other accused MRC members as it will lead to further delay,” The Standard quoted the prosecutor as saying.
