Police in Ngong have shot and killed an innocent man in Ngong in a mistaken identity incident.

The 60-year-old man was shot dead on Sunday outside his home after the police officers mistook him as part of a gang that had raided a nearby shop.

An Olooluwa police station officer fired at and killed Francis Gathua on the spot.

According to witnesses, the officer aimed a gun at Gathua who was standing at the robbery scene and killed him instantly.

“The man was at the scene where the robbers had broken into a small kiosk and stolen cash. Police from Olooluwa camp came after an alarm was raised but instead ended up killing Mzee Gathua, while the thieves escaped,” said Solomon Mbugua, a witness quoted by the Standard.

His body was later taken to the mortuary as officers continue to pursue the thieves.
