The ministry of health has banned the use and sale of water-piped tobacco commonly known as shisha.

Kenya becomes the third country in the region to ban the substance, coming after Tanzania and Rwanda went the same route.

Shisha smoking has become increasingly common among the youth in the country and is common in most entertainment joints.

In a gazette notice dated 24 December 2017, the government through the ministry of health, the substance is now banned.

In the notice, Health CS Cleopa Mailu has outlawed smoking and sale of the water-pipe tobacco, saying no one is allowed to import, manufacture, use or advertise, promote or distribute shisha in Kenya.

 The drug is said to have high levels of nicotine and is dangerous that smoking cigarettes according to medical practitioners.

Kenyans have reacted differently to the ban, with many supporting the move by the government.

However, some say the government should have consulted different stakeholders, saying the sale and usage of the drug had given employment to many young people.

The drug comes in different flavors including apple and mint.
