Gicharu, speaking at the university's Thika main campus on Tuesday, said that expansion of e-learning will make it possible for more students to access university education.

"You realise that many universities in Kenya especially the public ones have been concentrating on expanding their infrastructures in order to accommondate more students which is relatively expensive," said Gicharu.

He added: "What we need instead in this digital era is to stress more on virtual learning as opposed to infrastructure that are quite costly."

Gicharu has, however, said that for virtual learning to be realised in the country, internet costs must go down to make it affordable and reliable.

"Our internet costs as they stand now are very high and it is almost impossible to think of an affordable e-learning exercise. Internet providers and education stakeholders need to come together to make e-learning a reality," he said.
