Mount Kenya University students and surrounding area residents have a reason to smile, after the institution launched street lights along General Kago road, in an aim to improve security.

The students and area residents have been complaining for a long time now, saying the area around Starehe, Common wealth cemetery and Garage are badly lit, making it unsafe during the night.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the institution’s pavilion, Vice chancellor Prof Stanley Waudo, said that the they have lost two students to criminal activities along General Kago road, thus the institution decided to invest in the lighting.

“We have lost two students in the past along General Kago road, that is why we are committed to lighting up the institution and its environs to make sure that we guarantee our students and the neighborhood their security,” said Waudo.

“We have already put up one light just outside the gate, and we are in the process of putting up another light in the cemetery area, which will light up the area around the Garage and Starehe estate,” added Waudo.

 He said that the students should be patient with the institution to deal with lighting other areas, noting that other students living in Runda area have lamented of insecurity too, adding that they will collaborate with premises owners to set up the light.
