Mount Kenya University (MKU) has agreed to enrol Kiambu County Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for diploma and degree programmes in leadership and governance.

According to the speaker, Michael Irungu, the programme will enable the MCAs understand their mandate well and assist in their providing excellent services to the communities they represent.

The assembly signed a memorandum of understanding with MKU where it will reduce their fees by 20 per cent and the assembly will in return offer attachment to the university’s students. The MCAs will enrol like any other student and will have to attain the minimum qualification for a degree programme which is C and a D grade for diploma.

Paul Mburu, Mwiki Ward MCA, said the opportunity was welcome as it will inculacate governance and administration skills to them.

Coordinator Brian Oyugi assured that the MCAs will enrol with their ‘0’ levels results. So far, about 18 members have registered for degree and 12 for diploma. The degree course is set to take two and a half years and one and a half years for the diploma.

MKU is among one of the largest universities in the region with its main office in Thika Town. The assembly is also holding talks with other institutions such as Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) and the United States International University(USIU) to train the MCAs in Information Communication and Technology (ICT).
