There is heavy traffic along Garissa Road as Mt Kenya University holds its 9th graduation ceremony on Friday.
Other roads that connect with Garissa Road are also experiencing heavy traffic with motorists saying it is likely to remain that way for the better of Friday.
"We expected it because every time there is a big event happening along this road (Garissa) traffic builds up very fast. The traffic will only start to ease after the graduation is over," said Nahashon Kimani, a Kenya Mpya bus driver that ferries passengers from Makongeni to Nairobi.
The motorists say that they started the work early to compensate for the lost time.
"We were aware that the graduation ceremony would definitely affect our movements in and out of town. So, we started the work early because the travellers didn't also want to be caught up in the traffic," Daniel Kamau, another driver said.
They now suggest that the narrow highway needs to be expanded to be able to handle more traffic.
"We experience a build of traffic even during rush hours because the road can only handle a relatively fewer vehicles at a time. There is a need to expand it," said Patrick Njeru, a driver.
The construction of Thika by-pass is, however, expected to ease traffic along the highway as some vehicles bound for Nairobi to and from Garissa can take a diversion at Kivulini in Landless and at the Castle Brewery.
