The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has called on President Kenyatta to disband the traffic police department for what it termed as massive and incurable appetite for bribes in major roads across the country.
The umbrella body says the police unit has failed on its professionally mandated tasks in favor indecent acts of corruption.
Making the proposal to the government, Simon Kimutai who is the chairperson of MOA lamented that the named police department is driving them out of business noting its officers were in the habit of demanding and soliciting for bribes from them on a daily basis.
“We shall seek an appointment with the President to discuss the issue. We will request for a presidential order for an immediate withdrawal of traffic police officers from all the major roads. They should only engage in patrols and not stop vehicles to demand bribes," said Kimutai who was speaking in Nakuru county.
As this unfolds, the association has welcomed the move to introduce new curriculum to be adopted by all driving schools across the country noting that professionalizing driving will help restore sanity in the roads.
Kimutai further challenged the National Transport and Safety Authority to form a unit to deal with driving proficiency, testing and licensing of qualified drivers.
