A woman is nursing injuries at the Thika Level Five hospital after she was attacked by a mob for allegedly stealing drugs believed to be pregnancy pills.
Confirming the Wednesday incident, Thika sub-county police boss Shadrack Maithya said the police received an alarm from a Good Samaritan who called an officer to inform them of the crime.
The police arrived at the crime scene where the angry mob had beaten the victim up, leaving her with severe injuries on her whole body.
He condemned the public for taking the law into their hands rather than letting the police do their job.
“It is a barbaric act that should be condemned. We have launched investigations and we are soon coming to the bottom of this matter,” Maithya said.
He added that the community must work hand in hand with the police to ensure they curb such incidences and insecurity in the area.
According to the pharmacy attendant, Lucy Wangui, the victim was expectant and allegedly seemed depressed. Wangui said the woman asked for pain killers and when the attendant went in to fetch some water for her, on returning, she allegedly found the victim picking drugs from the shelf and that is when she screamed, attracting the crowd’s attention.
The victim will be summoned by the police after she gets well, Maithya said.
