A group of irate residents of Whitehouse Estate in Nakuru town Thursday evening beat up a middle-aged man whom they claimed has been selling to the public expired meat products. According to an eye witness Mark Kanyiri who operates a wines and spirits pub at the business centre, the man identified as Joseph Munyao had been warned severally by members of the public against selling to them expired chicken meat but he never changed. The pub attendant held that the hawker was beaten up by an irate mob that confiscated the meat products and fed them on stray dogs while demanding back their money. Kanyiri added that on several occasions before the incident, several people some who are patrons of his drinking joint, had complained about the expired meat products sold by the hawker at cheap prices. He said some members of the public complained of stomachaches after consuming the meat while others alleged to have thrown away the meat after tasting. “This guy has operated from here for only two months. I allowed him to sell the meat products near my pub because these things are popular with people who consume spirits. We don’t know where he came from but it seems he buys expired meat products from somewhere and sells to unsuspecting members of the public here. He has been warned severally but it seemed people were tired,’’ said Kanyiri. Another eye witness Milkah Auma who sells vegetables near the scene said a group of drunk youth stormed out of a drinking joint after some of them had purchased meat from the hawker a few minutes before a while and descended on him with kicks and fists accusing him of selling to them expired meat. She added that the rowdy group was joined by other curious members of the public in destroying the meat products and other tools of trade before chasing away the trader. She added that the hawker sustained injuries from the incident after the mob poured part of hot frying oil on him while threatening to lynch him.
