Plans are underway to rehabilitate and set up modern horticultural markets in Njoro, Nakuru.
The region is a leader in horticultural crops production but farmers have not reaped from their toil due to lack of a market to sell their produce.
This forces desperate farmers to sell their produce to brokers at a throw-away prices.
Farmers sell their carrots, cabbages, and potatoes to brokers who export to neighbouring East African countries as well as Marigiti Market in Nairobi.
Early this year, Governor Lee Kinyanjui tasked local leaders to help identify suitable land near shopping centres to set up markets. Areas targeted for the modern market include Kihingo, Mau Narok, and Mauche.
Announcing the progress of the project County Director of Political Affairs Beatrice Nyawira said they have already placed an advert calling for land.
“The county has made a breakthrough and construction of the Edgewood Market on a two-acre parcel of land to serve Njoro and Kihingo Wards will start soon,” Nyawira said.
She was speaking at St Peters Church in Kihingo during a fundraiser.
Nyawira said the County Government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries will be training farmers on proper farming techniques to improve their yields.
