Uasin Gishu County government will soon start building modern houses and also upgrade existing ones.

Housing CeC Robert Ng’isirei has said that this is aimed at improving housing standards in the county.

Speaking from his office on Tuesday, Ng’isirei said the county is committed to providing better housing for residents.

He stated that the county is facing a series of challenges in the housing sector including mushrooming of slums.

Ng’isirei said that several housing structures in Kidiwo and Mwanzo estates within Eldoret town have been earmarked for upgrading.

“We will demolish the structures that are in pathetic condition and build new flats for residents so that every citizen can have access to better housing,” he said.

He said the county has set aside adequate funds that will be used to upgrade housing and also build new structures.

“We intend to get rid of poor housing structures and slums in the next one year,” he said.

He observed that the county government is facing housing shortage due to the high number of people seeking to conduct business in the county.

The executive added that rural-urban migration has led to house shortages within Eldoret Town. He urged local investors to establish more housing units to address the high demand.

He however asked them to adhere to construction regulations saying that construction rules must be followed to curb disasters caused by poor construction.

The executive said that a crackdown on rogue buildings in the county will be launched soon.
