Nyali Member of Parliament Mohamed Ali has opposed calls to have the Coast region secede from Kenya. The first-time lawmaker slammed politicians pushing for self-rule, accusing them of promoting their own selfish interests. In a Facebook post on Friday, Ali advised Coast politicians pushing for the secession of the region to prioritise the welfare of residents, arguing that the secession campaign will not benefit them in any way.“Before you come to tell us that Coast is not in Kenya, first start by collecting the garbage, provide employment to our youth, combat drug trafficking, fight corruption, build schools for our children…. and after all these are done, then you come to us with that project you are pushing for,'' read Ali’s post in part.He further urged leaders at the Coast to remain united and work together towards improving the standards of living of residents for the sake of the region’s development. He maintained that the Coast region is part of Kenya and will continue being part of the country.''Leo nawaambia pasi na uoga kwamba Pwani ni Kenya na itasalia kuwa Kenya. (Today I tell you without fear that the Coast region is part of Kenya and it will remain being in Kenya),” said Ali.His sentiments come after Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Thursday vowed not to back down in their push for secession.Joho argued that the Coast region has been marginalised for a long time, arguing that attaining self-rule is the best solution to the problems facing the region.
