Retired President Daniel arap Moi says he is opposed to the Okoa Kenya movement that is pushing for a referendum to make constitutional changes.
Speaking when he celebrated his 90th birthday at Kabarak University at a small party that was attended by family members, dignitaries and friends, Moi said the movement by the opposition was disruptive and not of any benefit to Kenyans.
“I am opposing the Okoa Kenya movement since the issues that they are talking about are not a priority,” said the former president, who ruled Kenya for 24 years.
Moi emphasised his opposition towards Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) referendum calls, adding that he fully supports the government of the day. He urged all Kenyans to support the leaders so that they can run the government nicely.
Kabarak University vice chancellor, Jones Kaleli, highly praised Moi for his efforts, commitment and dedication to raising the standards of education in the country.
During the celebration, a coffee table book detailing his life and times was launched and a commemorative pillar unveiled at the Kabarak University entrance. The pillar is made up of marble, 650 kilogrammes of bronze and a waterfall.
Other dignitaries at the celebration included Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, his deputy Joseph Ruto, Senator Zipporah Kittony and former Nakuru MP Lee Kinyanjui.
