Former President Daniel Moi has lashed out at those calling for a referendum, saying it is a waste of time and meant to block development.
In a press statement to newsrooms by his press Service secretary Lee Njiru, the retired head of state said the calls for referendum are not genuine.
He criticised the opposition and the Council of Governors for their push for constitutional changes through a referendum, asking them to instead focus on development.
Moi, who ruled the country for 24 years, indicated that the referendum call is a political plot hatched to derail development.
“I want to ask those calling for referendum to stop and work with the government to foster development,” he said.
The retired president further asked politicians to stop dividing the country with the referendum calls.
Moi’s sentiments come barely a day after a section of governors allied to the Jubilee coalition distance themselves from the Council of Governors’ call for a referendum.
The county chiefs, including Nakuru’s Kinuthia Mbugua, said they did not support the referendum calls and vowed to work with the government to promote development.
