Independence party KANU on Thursday formally endorsed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid, months after showing signs of working with opposition.
Party’s Secretary General Nick Salat, had attended a number of functions hosted by the opposition, a move that reportedly sparked tension in Shade House.
But few days after Kenyatta meeting retired President Daniel Moi, KANU changed its initial position by throwing their support behind Jubilee government.
“We have ironed out some of the issues we had with them and I think everything is now clear. We shall support Uhuru’s re-election,” said Baringo senator Gideon Moi.
Moi however said: “We will not dissolve the party and obviously we shall field candidates in all elective posts apart from presidency.”
While still the party intends to work with Jubilee, a section of leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto maintains that Jubilee Party will also field candidates in regions perceived to be KANU strongholds.
Senator Moi, who also doubles as KANU chairman, has been at loggerheads with top Jubilee leadership for a while now.
