Lecturers at the Moi University Eldoret town campus on Tuesday joined other lectures from the 33 public universities across the country in an industrial action meant to push for the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) they signed in March.

Led by University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Moi University chapter Deputy Chairman Kiptanui Chebii, the lecturers carrying twigs, banners and singing songs criticising the government and Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i walked through major streets in Eldoret town bringing business to a standstill.

They accused the government of not being sincere in the implementation of the CBA.

"We singed a CBA and funds allocated to facilitate I implementation but as at today we are here to express our disappointment," said Chebii.

"The government should know that we will not resume our duties until the CBA is implemented in totality," he added.

Lectures argues that the government had agreed to release Sh10 billion before the end of June under the agreement that ended a 54-day strike in February but so far only Sh4.7 billion has been released.

Full implementation of the CBA will see lecturers in public universities get a 17.5 per cent pay rise and a 3.9 per cent increase in housing allowances.
