According to a police source, Jared Mokaya who was a 2013 graduate of Information and Communication Technology at Moi University joined the Al-Shabaab terror group while in Isbania area, Migori County.
It is from there that he was converted to Islam and, thereafter, adopted the baptismal name, Abdulaziz.
“It is not yet clear why Jared Mokaya was brutally killed by Al-Shabaab but it is most likely that he may have been disillusioned by the encounters in Somalia and may have resorted to come back home," read a police statement as quoted by the Nation.
However, the Kenyan intelligence reports have confirmed that the late IT student had crossed over to Somalia as revealed by a tracked call he had made to his parents in mid-August 2015.
Security experts have issued words of caution over the ever rising numbers of university students joining terror groups. It is also believed that the Garissa University attackers might have been given a tip off by allied students residing within in the college.
