Moi University health workers have threatened to down their tools if the institution will not provide them their extraneous allowances that were agreed upon five years ago.

The health workers on Wednesday morning held a peaceful demonstration around the university before stopping at the institution’s administration block demanding their pay.

Addressing fellow colleagues, the chairman of the health workers union, Mr William Obwur, criticised the institution management for allegedly sidelining them over the five years.

"It has been five years since we signed a memorandum of increasing our allowances but nothing has been done yet. Today we will not report to work until our arrears are met,” the chairman said.

The union’s chairman also noted that health workers at the University of Eldoret are being paid their allowances yet the main campus has neglected their workers and called upon the institution’s leaders to step up and pay them.

"We have always been committed in providing services but after all these years of waiting and writing letters to the Moi University management, our hopes of receiving the allowances have turned futile,” he added.

The health workers also condemned the institution’s leaders including the vice chancellor Prof Richard Mibei for spending millions of shillings in their travelling allowances and senate meetings and yet they could not pay their allowances.

The workers are yet to report to work as they wait for communication from the university concerning their grievances.
