Meru University Student Association Secretary-General Evans Njoroge was allegedly chased down by police before he shot dead on a farm during the protest against high school fees and poor learning conditions at the institution.

Through a post on his Facebook page, Choge said the killing as wrong and uncalled for. He called for solidarity of all Universty students leaders across the nation noting that "such barbaric acts will not go unanswered".

Here is the full statement following the unfortunate incident.

"It is with deep sadness that I regret the unexpected demise of a fellow comrade and friend from Meru University. Evans Njoroge was the Secretary-General of Meru University Students Association. News reaching my desk has it that he was shot by the Police while conducting a peaceful demonstration. Njoroge was fighting a move by the administration to increase tuition fees. I believe this is wrong and uncalled for. The legalities of holding a demonstration are enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya hence any act of violence at a learning institution against comrades is intolerable. I wish to mourn the death of this young man who gave his life while fighting for Comrades. I call for the solidarity of all Student Leaders across the Nation, such barbaric acts will not go unanswered! We are yet to know what transpired. Shine on your way Evans Njoroge. R. I. P. Overall ChairmanMoi University Students Organisation (MUSO)."

The alleged murder of the University students leader has elicited harsh reactions from Kenyans on social media.

Following the incident, students at the university blocked a section of the Meru-Maua road in protest.
