Moi University has outlined a plan that it will adopt to absorb 1,400 casual workers in the institution’s campuses across the country.

Speaking when delivering special address of the casual workers at the main campus in Kesses, Eldoret, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Laban Ayiro said he understands their plight and was committed to resolve them.

''I called for this meeting because my heart is always perturbed when I see a group of employees who are not recognised. Their salaries are paid after everyone else has been paid. I want to assure you that Ayiro will stand with you,” he said, Thursday.

In a communication, the VC said the University management will be fair during the process.

He said he would not consider academic qualifications because it is not about papers that one carries, but what they can do.

"The University currently has 156 vacancies that occurred due to natural attrition and death. With the upcoming construction projects of lecture halls and amphitheater, employment opportunities will be created to absorb the casual workers,'' he said.

However, the VC urged the employees to shun tribalism, reiterating that he respected every employee and that he would not have reached his current position if retired president Daniel Arap had not handpicked him from Lubinu High School in then Western Province, where he was a head teacher, to head Sunshine High School in Nairobi.
